AAII Atlanta February Meeting - ‘Understanding Professionally Managed Futures’

Roger Shepherd will introduce commodities as an asset class (hard commodities like natural gas, unleaded gasoline, light sweet crude oil, aluminum, copper, gold and silver; and soft commodities like corn, wheat, coffee, sugar, live cattle, lean hogs and soybean oil) and then discuss how individual investors can use Managed Futures as an investment vehicle that buys and sells futures contracts on commodities. Roger will illustrate the risks and return potential for Managed Futures and show how adding them to your portfolio may allow you to enhance returns will reducing risk through the low-correlation nature of commodities when combined with stocks and bonds. Roger will discuss the nature of the Commodity Trading Advisor (CTA) in the Managed Futures investment process.

Gale BrownIts too bad so few attended this meeting. Futures in the title probably didn't spark any interest. This was another oppertunity to learn about another way to invest. Especially when we need to find sources that have a low correlation to the stock and bond market. The managed futures market is in the early stages of growth like the mutual fund industry at one time. CTA's as their called are growing where a small investor can enter into it with $25,000-50,000
. This meeting really helped in understanding what it really is. Too bad. Maybe we can get them back again for members to be informed. MF Global was discussed which helped in having more of a comfort level in using the CME futures market.
